Every July 16th, Málaga's coastal neighborhoods celebrate the Virgen del Carmen, revered as the protector of sailors and fishermen. The atmosphere is a unique blend of devotion and maritime tradition.
Dressed in marengo attire—navy-black pants, white shirt, red sash, and sometimes barefoot or alpargatas—mariners and fishermen carry the Virgin's image through streets and onto the boats. At sea, a flotilla of vessels accompanies her procession along the coastline, while prayers, flowers, and the soft light of fireworks fill the night. It's a powerful, heartfelt tribute to Málaga's seafaring heritage.
